  • Multi-Family Yard Sale
    • ABOUT: Electronics, clothing, miscelaneous household items, tools, camping stuff, a raft, sewing machines, artwork, movies, collectable comics, jewelry, etc.
    • DETAILS: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. 6802 Roosevelt Ave E. 10 AM-6 PM.

SATURDAY, July 4

  • Annual 18th Ave NE 4th of July Kids Parade
    • ABOUT: Kids decorate their bikes, trikes, or themselves march in this approximately 2 block parade. Turn around and repeat!
    • DETAILS: Parade begins at 11 AM at the corner of NE 73rd and 18th Ave NE.

SUNDAY, July 5

  • Seattle Humane Society’s MaxMobile at the University Village 
    • ABOUT: The MaxMobile is the Humane Society’s mobile adoption and education unit with cats, dogs, or other critters available for on-the-spot adoption.
    • DETAILS: MaxMobile is parked outside the Ravenna Gardens building (#79 on this map), 3-6 PM.

MONDAY, July 6

  • Movie showing at the Seattle Public Library’s University Branch. 
    • ABOUT: Free movies showing at several library locations around Seattle. Watch “Roman Holiday,” the second movie in Americans Abroad: A Globetrotting Film Series at the University Branch.
    • DETAILS: University Branch Meeting Room, 5009 Roosevelt Way NE. 6-8 PM. FREE.

WEDNESDAY, July 8

  • University Village Sounds of Summer Concert: The Maldives
    • ABOUT: Music, beer garden, kids activities, and samples from U Village restaurants.
    • DETAILS: University Village parking lot. Wednesdays, July-August. Doors open at 5:45, show 6:30-8:30 PM. FREE.

THURSDAY, July 9

  • UPDATE: Opening night of Outdoor Movies at Magnuson Park: Back to the Future
    • ABOUT: This is the fifth year of summertime outdoor movies on a big screen, live entertainment, trivia, and food trucks on Thursdays evenings from July 9 – Aug. 27, 2015 at Magnuson. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and events are dog friendly.
    • DETAILS: Magnuson Park (grass athletic fields), 7400 Sand Point Way NE. Doors open at 7 PM, movie starts at dusk. $5 per person. Kids 5 and under are free.
  • STG presents Ben Hunter and Joe Seamons in the The Rainier Valley Revival. 
    • ABOUT: “Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons collaborate with students from Washington Middle School’s roots music program to tell stories and perform songs celebrating the history of the Rainier Valley. Through interpreting the music and culture of our local heritage, this concert will contribute to a revival of the wonderful stories and traditions that have lain dormant for too long!” – STG Website.  This concert is part of a series of free all-ages summer events at The Neptune Theater, Night at the Neptune.   • 80 Days of Summer at the Burke Museum of Natural History.
    • ABOUT: Summer activities planned around a weekly theme include a scavenger hunt, craft, and guess the content of a “mystery box.”  The theme for July 5-10 is “Objects in the Sky.”
    • DETAILS: The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, UW Campus at 17th Ave. NE and NE 45th St. Open daily, 10 AM-5 PM but CLOSED for the 4th of July. Activities included with museum admission, $7.50-10.

SATURDAY, March 28

  • View and shop the work of talented northwest artists and craftspeople. 
    • Best of the Northwest 2015 Spring Show, Magnuson Park, Hangar 30. More than 100 local artists, local food vendors, live music, and free arts table for the kids. Parking is free. Saturday, 10 AM-6 PM. Tickets are $6 at the door or $5 in advance online. Children 12 and under are free.
  • Shop spring plants at your local Audubon Society. 
  • Attend a workshop with a local zine artist. 
    • Drawing workshop with Owen Curtsinger. Owen will share his new self-published graphic novel, Myths of the Tusk, about the mysteries of the Narwhal.

SUNDAY, March 29

  • View and shop the work of talented northwest artists and craftspeople. 

MONDAY, March 30

  • Listen to a science talk with adult beverages. 
    • Science on Tap at Third Place Pub, 6504 20th Ave NE. “Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance: The Myths, The Reality and Hope for a Treatment,” with Ingrid Swanson Putlz, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Protein Design, University of Washington. 7 PM. FREE.

This weekend should be sunny with temperatures reaching 60 degrees. Let’s get outside! Or maybe grab a sunny seat in front of Ravenna’s new coffee shop, Ventoux Coffee Roasters on NE 55th St. It was a great spot to type up this post, for sure!

FRIDAY, March 6

  • Learn about and discuss the Burke Museum transformation. 
    • Information Sessions at the museum on the UW campus, 17th Ave. NE and NE 45th St. Fridays in March, April, and May, 8:30-9:30 AM. Light refreshments served. Register online. FREE.
  • Skate to music and games with the whole family!
    • Family Skate Nite at Bitter Lake Community Center Annex at 13040 Greenwood Ave N. 6:30-8:45 PM.  Every Friday. $4 per skater.

SATURDAY, March 7

  • Meet paleontologists and check out new fossils like the South Lake Union mammoth tusk! 
    • Dino Day at the Burke Museum, 17th Ave. NE and NE 45th St. 10 AM-4 PM. It’s the museum’s most popular annual event with tons of fun activities for the kids! Included with museum admission ($7.50-10). Free for members.
  • Exchange or buy science fiction and fantasy books, DVDs, or magazines.

    • Meet an Engineer at Seattle Public Library Northeast Branch, 6801 35th Ave NE. 6:30-7:30 PM. No Registration required. FREE.  Teens (12 and older) can meet a computer engineer from the UW Center for Game Science as well as a Civil and an Electrical engineer. Organized by the Seattle Public Library and the Pacific Science Center in honor of National Engineers Week.

  •  Take your tot to storytime with Music, Rhythm, and Movement. 
    • Musical Storytime at Ravenna Third Place Books, 6504 20th Ave NE. Every Friday, 11-11:30 AM. FREE. Presented in partnership with Jewish Junction and PJ Library.

When the wind blows, the power goes

Just after 9 PM on Thursday night, residents in the area started reporting power outages.

Also at that time, folks reported hearing booms and seeing flashes in the direction of the Northeast Branch of the library. A look at the Real-Time 911 page showed Engine 38 checking out a “transformer fire” at 3536 NE 70th Street at 9:03 PM.

UPDATE: Power started coming back on in homes about an hour later (here at HQ, 10:09 PM).

Another day, another bank robbery (UPDATES)

At 9:30 AM, UW Police Chief mentioned a bank robbery had occurred near University Village.

The Seattle Police Department’s later described the incident and the suspect:

Officers searching for bank robber after holdup in 4700 blk 25th NE. Susp: w/m, 30s, 6’2, heavy set, clean shaven, blu/green beanie&scarf

Suspect in 4700 blk 25th NE bank robbery displayed a handgun before fleeing bank. Police now searching area for suspect.

If you see anyone matching this description, call 911.

UPDATE (10:06 AM): Two local elementary schools are sheltering-in-place: Bryant and Laurelhurst.

By our count, this is the third shelter-in-place in three weeks for Bryant Elementary, all due to local bank robberies.

UPDATE (10:27 AM): The shelter-in-place has been lifted both schools as of 10:25 AM.

  •  Pick up some goodies at a neighborhood block sale. 
  • Add more loot to your Saturday thrifting at another multi-family yard sale. 
    • Five-family yard sale at 5712 30th Ave NE, 9 AM-5 PM. Items include antiques, collectibles, artwork, home décor, and children’s items. 
  • Shop some native and wildlife-friendly plants at the Seattle Audubon Fall Plant Sale.
    • Seattle Audubon Nature Center (8050 35th Ave NE), 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. Plants from local growers and nurseries such as Botanica, Discovery Gardens, Fairmeadow Nursery, Madrona Gardens, and Tadpole Haven Native Plants. FREE. 
  • Enjoy a show of Dahlias at Seattle Dahlia Society‘s 57th Annual Show. 
    • Lake City Community Center (12531 28th Ave NE), 12:30-5 PM. FREE.

Registration for fall Parks & Rec classes begins August 5

The end of summer approaches! Time to think about buying school supplies (Seattle Public Schools’ first day is September 5), and registering for fall classes with Seattle Parks and Recreation.

Here are a few hand-picked highlights:

  • The Laurelhurst Salmon Bake at Laurelhurst Park will be held on Thursday, September 11, from 5:30-8 PM. Delicious dinner, dancing, and carnival games. Price to be determined (but we’ll add it in here when it is determined).
  • The Meadowbrook Community Center and Pool tag team the Halloween holiday with a Haunted Bounce and Spook the Pool on Friday, October 24. The Bounce portion at MCC is from 6:30-7:30 PM, and the Spook portion at the MP is from 7:30-8:30 PM. $2 for the Bounce, $3.75 for the pool for youth (accompanying adults are free). There’s a 100 lb. floating pumpkin involved.
  • The Ravenna Holiday Arts & Crafts Sale is back on Saturday, December 6, from 10 AM-3 PM. Those crafty people who wish to participate should contact the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center for more details (206-684-7534).
  • Two Seattle Parks Christmas Ship dates this year:
    • Saturday, December 6, at Matthews Beach. Park at Meadowbrook Community Center and hop a shuttle to Matthews Beach for luminaries, a weather-permitting bonfire, and the flotilla of festive ships off-shore (Christmas Ship performance time is 9:45-10:05 PM).
    • Friday, December 19, at Magnuson Park Beach. Pre-activities at the Magnuson Community Center start at 8 PM and include live music, refreshments, and luminaries. Christmas Ship performance off-shore from 8:50-9:10 PM.
