Green Lake Way North Safety Improvements Open House

If you’re a regular reader of the Ravenna Blog these days, you’re into road safety improvements. (Seems to be all we post about on here lately, anyway.)

This next project is a bit out of our normal coverage area, but that doesn’t mean we don’t ever drive there.

On Tuesday, August 20, from 6:30-7:45 PM, the Seattle Department of Transportation is holding an open house about proposed safety improvements on Green Lake Way North (between N 50th and N 55th Streets) at the Green Lake Branch of the Seattle Public Library (7364 E Green Lake Dr N). The presentation portion begins at 6:45 PM.

More details (via email):

Green Lake Way North is currently a four-lane street that borders the east side of the Woodland Park Playfields and provides access to Green Lake from the south. The Seattle Department of Transportation is proposing changes to make the street safer and more comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to walk and ride bikes, as well as safer for drivers. The changes will reduce speeds, and improve pedestrian and bicycle access.

The proposal includes installing a new center turn lane, reconfiguring the street to provide one travel lane in each direction with bicycle lanes on both sides of the street, and improving pedestrian crossings. A new stop sign will be installed at West Green Lake Way North. Traffic signal operations at Green Lake Way North and North 50th Street will be improved by removing one block of parking on the north side of North 50th Street.

  1. Yay, yay, yay! Great improvements and much needed. I drive and bike through this intersection. This is a HUGE improvement for cars, bikers and pedestrians alike.

  2. This will be a big help for me during my winter commute as well. Yay SDOT!

  3. It’s nice to hear about these improvements. I’m curious whether intersection improvements mentioned at 50th are substantial; it’s really hard to do much there that’s good.

Sadly, the damage wrought on the local street network by Green Lake Way south of here, between 46th and 50th, remains. Not an original part of the street plan, it took a seam ripper to the urban fabric and made local access to places like Woodland Park harder than it ought to be.

  4. I notice lots of confusion and near accidents with cars heading either west around the Lake at SW corner of Golf course or trying to enter into moving traffic heading North or South. For such a well traveled road; I would think this particular section would also be considered.

  5. I notice confusion and accidents at the SW corner of Golf Course heading either West towards Aurora or coming from Aurora and wanting to enter traffic going North or South. It is a dangerous intersection and I would think for such a well traveled area it would have been included in traffic updating.

Changes need to happen. SHOULD the large amount of money be spent with this project. Did ANYONE notice the road surface north bound from the golf course to Winnona (Real Estate Office) is like a bad logging road. It is full of pot holes, dips and valleys. I did notice the big dip in the bicycle lane was filled just west of the Library but NOT the one for the cars. There is a report Sept 3, on Kiro TV that 70% of the traffic light equipment is in poor condition. I question All the money going for bicycle stuff.
The Election is Just Around the Corner. It is time to VOTE

    • Andres Salomon says:

Potholes are filled by SDOT when they get reported. They’re actually really responsive about it. I suspect that no one reported the big dip in the road, but someone did report the dip in the bike lane. When I’m in a car and I hit a pothole, I just curse and forget about it. When I’m on a bike and I nearly wipe out because of a pothole, I pull over, whip out my phone, and report it immediately to the city.

I suspect other people on bikes do similar things.

But sure, “VOTE” against the big evil bike conspiracy, because that’s obviously your boogeyman.
