University Branch of the Seattle Public Library closed temporarily (UPDATES)

Via the Seattle Public Library twitter feed: A 99-year-old sewer line serving the University Branch (5009 Roosevelt Way) is broken, and the library is closed until further notice.

There is no damage to the library building itself, but there is no water or sewer service at this time. Repairs are underway, and holds will be extended due to the closure.

According to the University Branch’s website, a reopening date has not yet been determined.

UPDATE (Thursday, December 1): University Branch website now says, “The branch will reopen at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Holds ready for pickup at the University Branch now will expire Saturday, Dec. 10.”

Holds ready for pickup at the University Branch now will expire Saturday, Dec. 10.

UPDATE (Nov. 25, 3:33 PM):
Via the SPL twitter feed: University Branch will not be open on Saturday. Bookdrop is open and holds have been extended to 12/3.

Libraries CLOSED all next week, but still accessible (sort of)

As is becoming an annual tradition, ALL Seattle Public Library locations will be closed next week (Monday, August 29 through Sunday, September 4) due to citywide budget cuts, in addition to being closed on Monday, September 5 for Labor Day.

This time of year is historically the least busy time for our libraries, which is why it is frequently the target for furlough days.

If you have been meaning to visit our local Northeast Branch (6801 35th Avenue NE), here are the remaining open days before the furlough begins:

    Friday, August 26, 10AM-6PM
    Saturday, August 27, 10AM-6PM
    Sunday, August 28,1PM-5PM

After this weekend, the next day the Northeast Branch will be open is Tuesday, September 6, from 10AM-8PM.

The good news: During the closure, some library services will still be accessible. As is becoming a Ravenna Blog tradition, here is a list of the Seattle Public Library services that WILL work during the closure:

  • The online catalog! But you can’t place holds.
  • “My Account” information!
  • The new online system for paying your fees and fines!
  • Calendar of Events!
  • SPL Mobile! The library system’s mobile phone app.
  • Databases! Who doesn’t enjoy a romp through Consumer Reports?!
  • Downloadable media! Got an e-reader of some sort? You may not even notice there’s a furlough happening.
  • Digital collections! Photos from AYP, historical Seattle, and the like.
  • Library BLOGS! Specifically “Push to Talk” for teens and “Shelf Talk” for adults.
  • Library podcasts!

For the list of services that will be unavailable during the one-week closure, visit www.spl.org.

Upcoming events at the Northeast Library (with PJ Story Time tonight!)

Some events of note happening in the next couple weeks at the Northeast Library (6801 35th Avenue NE):

Pajama Story Time TONIGHT

Weekly Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers at the Northeast Library are on break until March 1st while Children’s Librarian Erica Delavan is out visiting area schools.

Lucky for us connoisseurs of Story Time, there is a Pajama Story Time this evening, from 7-7:30 PM.

From the Northeast Library events calendar:

It is pajama story time at the Northeast Branch! Bring your preschoolers and toddlers to enjoy stories, rhymes, songs and fun with our children’s librarian, who will be wearing pajamas, too!

Jammify your kids (and yourself) right after dinner, and get ready for a good time.

Presidents Day is Monday, February 21 – Libraries are CLOSED

Another good reason to head to the library this week: There’s a three-day weekend coming up. Do you have enough reading material?!

Seattle Opera Preview, Tuesday, February 22

The Seattle Opera’s next production is Massenet’s Don Quixote (runs February 26 through March 12). You can catch a preview at the Northeast Library from 6:30-7:30 PM on Tuesday, February 22.

Miscellaneous tidbits:

On November 20th, Eckstein will launch Saturday School, a new intervention program for students who have four or more missing assignments and a grade of D or E in a class. Teachers will refer students to Saturday School and counselors will call the student’s home to let families know that the student is expected to attend from 8:30 – 11:30 am.  Students who successfully turn in all missing work by Thursday afternoon after being referred to Saturday School will be excused from attending. The purpose of this intervention is to encourage students to take responsibility for their work and to give them additional time and support if they are stuggling to complete it.

There’s also a request for volunteer tutors during those same dates and times (November 20, and December 4 and 18). To volunteer or ask questions about Saturday School, contact Eckstein Volunteer Coordinator LauraLeigh Young at llyoung@seattleschools.org.

Libraries Reopen Tuesday, NE Branch Story Times Off Until October

The Northeast Library reopens on Tuesday!  Yay!

Strap the kids into the mini-van Volvo station wagon and head on down to 6801 35th Ave NE to return that overdue copy of Harold and the Purple Crayon, but if you’re expecting to go to Story Time…

Tall as a Tree!

…you’re out of luck.

Wide as a...wait a second...

Children’s Librarian Erica Delavan will be spending some of her time this month catching up from the closure and visiting local elementary schools.  Story Times will resume the first week of October.

Erica recommends, in the meantime:

Begin with Books kits: Check out thematic kits for toddlers and preschoolers. More information on how to reserve these kits is here. [http://www.spl.org/default.asp?pageID=audience_children_parents_themekits]

That link will be open on Tuesday, too.

What You CAN Do During the Library Closure

In case you didn’t know, in case the Ravenna Blog is your ONLY source of news — we’re flattered, certainly, but we DON’T recommend it — ALL branches of the Seattle Public library are CLOSED next week.

There is a big ol’ list of SPL services that won’t work during the furlough (see above link for details), and many other news sources have listed them. The Ravenna Blog shall not.  We prefer to think positively about these things.

THUS, here are the Seattle Public Library services that WILL work during the closure:

  • The online catalog!  But you can’t place holds.
  • “My Account” information! See your fines, use the week off to find cash to pay them.

There you are! Your list of CAN DO for the furlough week. If you need anything else, you’ve got through Sunday, August 29.

GO GO GO!

I'd wager the parking here still works, too.
