  • Add more loot to your Saturday thrifting at another multi-family yard sale. 
    • Five-family yard sale at 5712 30th Ave NE, 9 AM-5 PM. Items include antiques, collectibles, artwork, home décor, and children’s items. 
  • Shop some native and wildlife-friendly plants at the Seattle Audubon Fall Plant Sale.
    • Seattle Audubon Nature Center (8050 35th Ave NE), 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. Plants from local growers and nurseries such as Botanica, Discovery Gardens, Fairmeadow Nursery, Madrona Gardens, and Tadpole Haven Native Plants. FREE. 
  • Enjoy a show of Dahlias at Seattle Dahlia Society‘s 57th Annual Show. 
    • Lake City Community Center (12531 28th Ave NE), 12:30-5 PM. FREE.

SUNDAY, September 7

  • Adopt-a-pet at the University Village. 
    • MaxMobile, Seattle Humane Society’s mobile adoption and education center, parked outside Ravenna Gardens. Cats, dogs, and critters available for on-the-spot adoption. 11 AM-3 PM.
  • Dahlia Show continues at Seattle Dahlia Society‘s 57th Annual Show.
    • Lake City Community Center (12531 28th Ave NE), 11 AM-4 PM. FREE.

The forecast calls for some clouds and upper 70s until Sunday when we might break 80.

SATURDAY, August 16

  • Check out some old cars, raise money to fight cancer.
    • 7th Annual Wedgwood/Chad Shanks Memorial Car Show, Wedgwood Broiler parking lot at 8230 35th Avenue NE, 10 AM-4 PM.  Free car show, drink specials at the Broiler all day long, raffle with prizes. Portion of proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
  • Shop local at multi-family garage sale
    • 2627 NE 92nd Street (between 30th and 27th Ave. NE), 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. Items include: Canon PowerShot SD870 is Digital Elph Camera, jogging stroller, home decor and organization, rubber stamps, lemonade stand, and custom made  balloon animal (profits will go to local animal shelters), etc!
    • Oops, the listing for this one has disappeared so…
  • Help a neighbor downsize by upsizing yourself with their stuff!
    • Garage/Estate sale7342 15th Avenue NE, Saturday and Sunday, 9 AM start. This is not a getting rid of junk sale. We are eliminating nearly all of the contents of the house. A great many high quality items will be for sale: Dishes (White Elements) and glasses, flatware (Mikassa), pots and Pans and other kitchenware, furniture, tools, collectibles, antiques, linens, blankets, books and CDs, household items (iron, ironing board, lamps), art objects (Oaxacan figures, pottery), bikes.
  • Shop local and support a holiday event institution!
    • Annual Candy Cane Lane Yard Sale, NE Ravenna Blvd and NE Park Road, 9AM – 3PM. This is Candy Cane Lane’s main fundraiser. Proceeds are used for decorations and electricity for Candy Cane Lane, a long-time Seattle Tradition. We will have kitchen items, household items, books, art work, kids clothes, teen clothes, a dresser, ottoman and more. No early birds, please.
  • Listen to stories and sing some songs with the kids.
    • Third Place Books Children’s Storytime (6504 20th Ave NE), 11:00 AM, every Saturday. FREE.
  • Volunteer to save one of the best forest sections of Magnuson Park. 

SUNDAY, August 17

  • Buy some wares from crafty people.
    • Maple Leaf Pop Up Market, Blue Saucer Cafe parking lot (9127 Roosevelt Way NE), 8 AM-4 PM. Family-friendly, open air market with approximately 30 artists selling wares from jewelry to fused glass to garden art. Carnival theme!

MONDAY, August 18

  • Watch and sing along with your favorite songs from The Little Mermaid.
    • Family Movies Sing Along at the Northgate Branch (10548 5th Ave NE), 5-7 PM. Arrive on time as space will be limited. Goody bags with props for singing along will be provided. FREE.

  • Join the Viking invasion of Ballard!
    • Viking Days Festival at the Nordic Heritage Museum (3014 NW 67th Street), 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Swedish Pancake Breakfast both mornings, live music, Scandinavian foods, beer garden, craft demonstrations, vendors, children’s activities, and Viking Encampment. FREE admission to both the museum and the festival all weekend.

Presented by Sustainable NE Seattle and Greendrinks/Sustainable Seattle, and sponsored by BECU. Local bands, urban farm animals, beer garden, drop-in bike repair, food and vendors, games, and more. Your Busy Weekend in Northeast Seattle: July 11-14

Forecast calls for high-80s on Friday and Sunday with 90 degrees on Saturday. Let’s make popsicles! For dinner!

SR 520 will be closed from 11:00 PM on Friday, July 11th until 5:00 AM, Monday, July 14th. And on Saturday morning, the annual STP (Seattle to Portland) bike ride starts. From 4:45–7:30 AM waves of 500 to 900 cyclists will be leaving the UW’s E-1 parking lot every 10 minutes, heading south on Montlake, west on Pacific, north on Brooklyn, and west on Campus Parkway to cross the University Bridge.

FRIDAY, July 11

  • Enjoy some local art outside, festival-style (day 1).
    • Wedgwood Art Festival, Our Lady of the Lake (8900 35th Avenue NE; new location this year), 10 AM-5 PM. 65 booths of fine art, 8 musical acts, 6 food vendors, 2 puppet shows, and more.
  • Watch a Meaningful Movie, and learn about public disclosure law and GMO labeling

SATURDAY, July 12

  • Enjoy some local art outside, festival-style (day 2).

Your Busy Weekend in Northeast Seattle: July 3-7

The weekend forecast sounds beautiful with Saturday and Sunday hovering around 80 degrees.

A large convention at Husky Stadium this weekend you all might want to be aware of, traffic-wise: 35,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses will be meeting at the stadium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Event activities run from 9 AM-5 PM. Access and egress to the Stadium will be handled in much the same way as other large events like basketball and Commencement.

Don’t forget to grab your holiday weekend reads from the Northeast Branch BEFORE July 4th, as all branches are closed on Independence Day.

THURSDAY, July 3

  • Shop at a local farmer’s market for dinner, then have a seat and eat.
    • Lake City Farmer’s Market, at NE 125th Street and 28th Avenue NE. Open Thursdays from 3-7 PM through October 2. In-season, Washington-produced foods and farm products, ready-to-eat foods, and more. Live music, special events, and activities for kids scheduled during the season. North Helpline food donation table (for shelf-stable items).

FRIDAY, July 4

  • Parade your red, white, and blue down 18th Ave NE! 
    • Meet at 7041 18th Ave NE, 11 AM, with decorated kids, bikes, or trikes for the Annual 18th Ave Fourth of July Parade. Bring a dish to share at a potluck afterwards. Drinks and paper goods provided for $1 donation per family.

SATURDAY, July 5

  • Sip some local wine at your neighborhood wine shop. 
    • Free tasting of 8 Bells Winery wines (Ravenna White 2011, Roosevelt Red 2011, Cabernet Sauvignon David’s Block 2011, and Sangiovese 2011) at McCarthy & Schiering Wine Merchants, 6500 Ravenna Ave NE, 11 AM-5 PM. The winemaker will be on-hand during the first part of the tasting.
  • Say hello to the lifeguards, back on duty for the summer. 
    • Magnuson Park Beach, Matthew’s Beach, and several other sites around the city. Check out the free mid-day and evening swim lessons for kids, too!

Your Busy Weekend in Northeast Seattle: June 26-30

This weekend looks to be partly cloudy and mid- to high-60s, with a chance of showers on Saturday.

Your friend and mine, the SR 520 Bridge, will be closed 11 PM on Friday, June 27 until 5 AM on Monday, June 30. We keep hoping that WSDOT will ask everyone to help break a Guinness World Record for simultaneous picnicking on days like this, but no such luck. Yet.

Oh, and there’s this little 40-year-old party called Pride.

THURSDAY, June 26

  • Shop at a local farmer’s market for dinner, then have a seat and eat.

Family-friendly hands-on nature fun in the garden, ice cream social and music in the amphitheater.  Bring a blanket and dinner for a picnic in the amphitheater or Children’s Garden. $1 per person for the ice cream. Music by the Weavils (Bluegrass/Americana music).

SATURDAY, June 28

  • Clean up a community space with the community.
    • Hunter Farm Gathering Place work party, 7744 35th Ave NE from 9 AM-noon. General maintenance to be done, including weed pulling, power washing, and garbage picking-up. Bring gloves and beverages/snacks to share.
  • Build a playground for community kids with the community.
  • Start to build next year’s vegetable garden, today!
    • Seed Saving workshop, Northeast Seattle Tool Library (2415 80th Avenue NE). 6:30-8:30 PM. Taught by Caitlin Moore (The Urban Food Warrior and Co-Director of the King County Seed Lending Library), workshop covers basic concepts, vocabulary and techniques. FREE.

SUNDAY, June 29

  • Swim Green Lake on a 1/2 mile or 1 mile race course. 
    • 10th Annual Green Lake Open Swim, Green Lake Community Center (7201 East Green Lake Dr N), first race starts at 9 AM. Last day to register on-line is tomorrow, Thursday, June 27th.  Register in-person on Sunday at Green Lake Community Center, 7:30-8:30 AM. Adult, non-refundable registration fee is $45.

SATURDAY

  • Ride together to Seattle Children’s Livable Streets Celebration.
    • Meet up with Kidical Mass at the Husky Grind (3925 Adams Lane NE) at 10 AM and head out by 10:20 AM on the Burke-Gilman Trail detour to the newly completed connecting path to Children’s Hospital. The Celebration will include free bike helmets and fittings, bike rodeo, food and prizes.
  • Recycle your outdated electronics and shred personal paperwork.
    • Center for Spiritual Living parking lot (5801 Sand Point Way NE), 10 AM-2 PM. Electronics to be refurbished and reused by InterConnection for unemployed and low-income individuals and families. Items accepted: desktop and laptop computers, monitors, TVs, cell phones, keyboards, power cables, and speakers. Shredding done by Confidential Data Disposal, Inc.
  • Time travel to gardens of the past with the kids at story time. 
    • Time Machine Story Program at the UW Botanic Gardens’ Miller Library in Laurelhurst (3501 NE 41st Street), 10:30 – 11:15 AM. Ages 3-8 with families but all ages are welcome. Free. 

Oralea Bonus Event: If none of these Northeast Seattle events strikes your fancy, maybe a trip to Lake Forest Park Third Place Books for the music of Smilin’ Scandinavian Polka is just what you’ve been waiting for. Let’s dance! Saturday, June 14th, 7:30-9:30 PM.
